Silver diamine fluoride (SDF)
Fluoride treatments aren’t required for everyone. They are recommended for a segment of the population of adults, young people, and children who face a higher cavity risk than their peers. The CDA recommends considering fluoride treatments for children after they turn 3. Your dentist will determine cavity risk and make recommendations.
An exam and a cavity risk assessment are done first. That will determine how often you should get a fluoride treatment. The CDA recommends that fluoride treatments be scheduled only once every six months unless you have a high caries risk assessment.
Patients receiving a fluoride treatment are advised to avoid eating and drinking for at least 30 minutes after the treatment, maybe longer. This allows the fluoride to be absorbed into the teeth.
