A Brief Look at the CDCP

The Government of Canada established the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) to provide essential dental care to those who previously lacked access to insurance and could not afford oral health care. Eligible households are Canadian residents with an adjusted family net income under $90,000 who filed a tax return for the previous year and have no access to dental insurance.

Are You Eligible?

Eligibility requirements to participate in the CDCP are:

Canadian resident for tax purposes
A 2025 filed tax return
No access to dental insurance through an employer, a pension, or a private plan.

Applying for the CDCP

New participants can apply now through open enrollment for 2026-2027. Previous enrollees must renew by June 1 to keep continuous coverage; renewing after that date can leave a gap in coverage.

CDCP Coverage

Most basic dental services are covered by the CDCP, including exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. Some services, such as orthodontics, are covered only in limited cases with preauthorization, and others are not covered.

When Can I Make an Appointment Under the CDCP?

You must first receive an acceptance and welcome letter from the CDCP administrator before scheduling an appointment with Versante Dental. The letter contains all the necessary information for us to bill the CDCP directly. It can take several months to get your welcome letter, so it is best to apply as soon as open enrollment opens.

When will I know if I am accepted into the CDCP?

Processing times vary. You will receive a welcome letter from Sun Life, the CDCP administrator, once you are accepted.

What if I need dental services now?

Any dental services you need immediately will be self-pay.

Will I need to make a co-payment?

It depends on your household income. Lower-income households pay nothing; households with an adjusted family net income between $70,000 and $89,999 pay a portion of the fee. Our staff can confirm your co-payment level from your CDCP welcome letter.

Can I get dental services anywhere with the CDCP?

No, you can use the CDCP at participating dental offices, such as Versante Dental in Mississauga, Ontario.
