Fluoride Treatments Prevent Cavities

Most people know that fluoride in drinking water has reduced cavity rates across Canada since the 1940s. Many do not know that you can get additional protection from a topical fluoride treatment available at Versante Dental in Mississauga, Ontario. Our fluoride treatment is painless and can be added to your regular dental exam and teeth cleaning.

The Effectiveness of Fluoride Treatments

Studies show that in-office fluoride treatments can reduce the risk of cavities by 37 to 47 percent. The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) states that fluoride treatments also stop early decay and protect teeth against acid. It recommends fluoride treatments for children under 8 years old.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF)

The CDA rates the varnish as the most effective fluoride treatment for in-office use. SDF is the most recommended for stopping active tooth decay. The protocol is the same regardless of the type of fluoride treatment given. The dentist applies the fluoride product and it absorbs into the teeth to strengthen tooth enamel.

What to Expect in a Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments aren’t required for everyone. They are recommended for a segment of the population of adults, young people, and children who face a higher cavity risk than their peers. The CDA recommends considering fluoride treatments for children after they turn 3. Your dentist will determine cavity risk and make recommendations.
An exam and a cavity risk assessment are done first. That will determine how often you should get a fluoride treatment. The CDA recommends that fluoride treatments be scheduled only once every six months unless you have a high caries risk assessment.
Patients receiving a fluoride treatment are advised to avoid eating and drinking for at least 30 minutes after the treatment, maybe longer. This allows the fluoride to be absorbed into the teeth.
