What Happens During Oral Surgery?

Exactly what happens during an oral surgery depends on the type of surgery and the reason for it. Generally, every surgery will include some of the same procedures.

You likely will be given a prescription for antibiotics to take before the surgery. This will happen in your exam and consult a few days before surgery. The medication is to prevent infection.
Sedation will be discussed. Your dentist will review health records for sedation.
A topical numbing medicine and an injection anesthetic will be used. This helps you avoid pain during oral surgery. You may feel pressure and movement.
Your vital signs will be monitored. You will likely wear an oxygen sensor on your finger and could wear a monitor for your blood pressure or heart rate during the procedure. This is more likely if you are using sedation.
Another staff member will assist in the surgery. They may monitor your vital signs, assist with rinsing your mouth, vacuum water from your mouth, and take additional X-rays after the procedure.
You will be required to have another person drive you home and stay with you for several hours after surgery. This is important if you have sedation, as it will leave you too groggy to drive and could have side effects once it starts to wear off.
You may be given prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medicine after surgery. Antibiotics prevent infection, and pain medicine will help manage discomfort over the next 48 hours.
